  Chapter One

Sabine Black typed frantically upon her keyboard into a new instant message, as a look of intense curiosity heightened in her eyes.

“Woman!” Sabine typed into the open chat box to her friend and colleague Bianca Dean. “Are you here?!” The look on Sabine’s fast morphed from excitement into irritation as she waited for her friend to answer her message that she had just sent no more than two and a half seconds ago.

“Good morning to you, too, sunshine…” Bianca replied sarcastically from her cubicle down the hallway. She wondered what type of fresh, salacious gossip Sabine was bringing her today. It was awful early for exclamation points, Bianca thought as she awaited a response from Sabine.

“Oh, my God… It’s about time! I didn’t think you we’re coming in!” Sabine exclaimed.

Bianca rolled her eyes. Always so dramatic. “Of course,” Bianca typed. “I had a meeting first thing this morning.”

“Ugh,” Sabine replied. “I have like four today. It never ends!”

“How was your weekend with Rob?” Bianca asked in genuine curiosity.

“Action packed!” Sabine typed. If her fingers moved any faster upon the keyboard, they might just threaten to break off. “He stayed over the whole weekend…”

  “Ooooh!” Bianca exclaimed. “Getting serious!”

“Oh, shut up,” Sabine replied, sounding somewhat embarrassed by the attention Bianca was lavishing her with. In reality, she wasn’t fooling anyone, though. Bianca knew she loved the attention. “So what about you? Do you plan on being single forever?” Sabine loved prying into Bianca’s romantic life, or lack thereof.

“One day my prince will come!” Bianca replied facetiously. He’s probably lost somewhere, wearing a hat made of aluminum foil, Bianca thought.

“More like one day you’ll find a guy that doesn’t bore you to death. Oh, my God, did you watch the Academy Awards last night?!” Sabine asked quickly changing the subject.

“Gag me! I can’t stand that crap. You know this…” Bianca reminded her friend. But despite the fact that Bianca was repulsed by the latest of celebrity gossip, her dear friend Sabine felt the need to fill her in, day after day.

“You know I had to get my fix! Girl, you know my man looked downright delicious!” Sabine exclaimed. Her man, also known as Brad Pitt, a man she has never even been in the same room as, had no idea that Sabine even existed.

“I’m sure he did,” Bianca replied as she rolled her eyes and shook her head in disbelief.

“Sigh! I can’t believe you don’t like him!” Sabine exclaimed in exaggerated shock.

  “Eh. Just not my type
” Bianca said plainly.

“Type,” Sabine went on. “You have no type.

“Of course I do… It’s just not the Brad Pitt type. I don’t want to go out with a guy that takes longer to get ready than I do. My man shouldn’t be prettier than me,” Bianca explained with a smirk growing on her face.

“Mess!” Sabine exclaimed. “I know your type, anyway!”

“Oh, yeah? And that would be?” Bianca egged her friend on.

“The Mr. CEO type…” Sabine replied. “Our CEO, to be exact.”

“Yes! Grant Peterman the third is one fine specimen of a man. I wouldn’t mind getting a piece of that…” Bianca replied suggestively as her thoughts drifted to the chairman of the board’s fine physique.

“Oh, God,” Sabine griped. “Don’t go having an orgasm…”

“No,” Bianca continued. “I’ll reserve that for Mr. CEO...”

Sabine laughed behind her computer screen. “You wish!”

Bianca retorted, “Hey, a woman can dream, can’t she?!”

“Oh, sugar. Gotta go. Satan just arrived, and she looks pissed!” Sabine responded vibrantly, referring to the Vice President of Delagamo Enterprises, and ex-wife of the CEO, himself, Carolina Peterman.

“Ugh. I don’t know what he ever saw in her!” Bianca complained.

  “She’s something alright,” Sabine replied.

“Pitbull in an LBD…” Bianca added.

“Totes. Lunch at Guido’s?” Sabine asked.

“Yeah,” Bianca replied. “See you there.”

  Chapter Two

Bianca Dean tapped her red nails nervously against her desk as she eyed the meeting notification that had just popped up on her screen. Her red stiletto pump shook up and down as her leg tapped anxiously. Grabbing her desk phone, Bianca whispered to herself, “Oh, my God… Pick up… Sabine… Where the hell are you?!”

“Good afternoon… Thank you for contacting Delagamo Enterprises PR Department. My name is Sabine Black. How can I be of service?”

“I’m freaking out…” Bianca exclaimed as she spoke in barely more than a whisper into her phone.

“Freaking out?! Why?” asked Sabine, tossing aside her oh, so professional demeanor for a more casual tone.

“I’ve got an urgent meeting request from Mr. Peterman!” Bianca replied in a panicked voice.

“What?!” asked Sabine, choking on her afternoon cup of coffee.

“I’m not kidding. The meeting is in fifteen minutes! Do you think I’m getting fired?!” Bianca asked in an almost hysteric tone of voice.

“You’re a workaholic! You basically live here. No,” Sabine replied in a ‘get real’ tone of voice. “Maybe he wants to ask you out!”

“Get real, Sabine!” Bianca snapped, not appreciating Sabine’s brand of humor at this particular point in time.

“Girl! You will be the topic of all the water cooler gossip… I’m tellin’ ya!”

Bianca pinched her nose as she allowed her eyelids to close. Her friend was really testing her nerves today. In a calmer tone of voice, she asked, “What do you think this urgent meeting is about?!”

“I don’t know! Did you do your Code of Conduct training they keep emailing us about?” Sabine asked, grabbing at straws.

“Oh, shit!” Bianca exclaimed. “When was it due?!”

“Hold on,” Sabine suggested. “Let me check… Oooh! Last Monday!” Sabine explained. “Better get on it.”

“Oh, my God… I’m getting canned for sure,” Bianca commiserated. “I am so fucking dead.”

“It’s not that serious, Bianca,” Sabine typed as she rolled her eyes so hard, they threatened to roll away for good. Then, as she was silently cursing at her friend in her mind, another thought came to her mind. “Hey,” she began again. “Didn’t you apply for that executive administrative position…?” Sabine asked, thinking that perhaps she had found the root cause behind the invitation to the Vice President’s office.

“Yeah, so?” Bianca replied, clearly not putting two and two together. “I don’t think that would be classified as urgent.”

“Maybe he really wants to meet with you…” Sabine suggested in a most flirtatious tone of voice.

“Oh, please!” Bianca exclaimed. “Goodbye, crazy!”

Without another word between them, Bianca hung up the phone ignoring her friend’s high-pitched laughter. She gave the email reminder one last look before she made a beeline towards the elevator bank. Try as hard as she might to calm herself before the meeting, Bianca’s heart was going supersonic.

Bianca’s heels clicked loudly against the marble floor in the elevator bay. She pressed the up button and waited for the next available car that would take her to the fiftieth floor of the Delegamo Enterprises Headquarters in Los Angeles, California. In her eleven years of working for the Luxury Furniture giant, she could not recall ever feeling so nervous before. Finally, the elevator had arrived, and Bianca followed the crowd into the elevator. She could barely shuffle her feet; the elevator was so crowded. She didn’t recognize anyone on the elevator, but when she pressed the button for the fiftieth floor, everyone in the car began to stare at her with intense curiosity.

As Bianca stepped off the elevator, her stomach lurched with nervous anxiety. The top floor of Delegamo Enterprises was nothing short of regal and exquisite. With white marble floors, white French doors, and official portraits lining the walls, Bianca felt as if she had walked into a palace fit for royalty. The likenesses of members of the board and senior management lined the walls with oil paintings hanging in handsome cherry frames. Manuel Delagamo, the franchise founder, casted a stern glare from his frame. Next to him, his daughter Carolina Delagamo-Peterman looked serious but beautiful with her long blonde locks falling over her shoulders. Finally, the last portrait on the wall was the one that caused Bianca’s heart to flutter at full-speed. Grant Peterman, III, gave a sexy and sultry smirk from his painting. His tan skin peeked out from his three-piece suit and his eyes sparkled with excitement.

Sigh, Bianca thought as she let out a dramatic breath of air. Time to go get fired by the man of my dreams. This is exactly my black hearted luck.

Two men in black suits and white gloves opened the French doors for Bianca and led her to an evergreen hued plush wingback chair where she would await Mr. Peterman.

“Mr. Peterman is expecting you,” one of the men said. “Please, Miss. Have a seat. He should be with you shortly.”

“Thank you,” Bianca said, as she took her seat. Nervously, she crossed her legs at her ankles and pulled down her red dress which was riding up her thighs. She pulled out a compact mirror to check her make-up and fix her chestnut brown locks. She wanted to make a good impression. She didn’t want to look like a train wreck walking into the most eligible bachelor of L.A.’s office.

An older woman dressed in a beautiful navy-blue frock approached Bianca with a warm smile.

  “Miss Dean?” she asked politely.

  “Yes, Ma’am,” Bianca replied courteously.

“Mr. Peterman will see you now…”

Oh, God… Bianca thought as her stomach dropped once more.

She followed the secretary into the Vice President’s office. Her legs felt like jelly, so shaky that she felt as though she would stumble at any second.

That would be real cute, Bianca thought vividly.

“Mr. Peterman… Miss Dean is here to see you, as you requested,” the secretary explained to him in a kind tone of voice.

“Thank you kindly, Agnes,” Grant said, his voice thick and smoldering. “Miss Dean… Please have a seat and make yourself comfortable.”

As Agnes saw herself out of the office, Bianca took in her surroundings. The CEO sat behind a massive oak desk with a gold placard that announced his name in a bold, elegant script. He didn’t bother decorating the walls, and instead, allowed his incredible view of the Los Angeles skyline to act as his sole conversation piece.

Well that, Bianca thought. And the work of art that is h
is face.

“Miss Dean… I’m so glad you could join me at such short notice…” Grant began.

“Of course, Sir. I noticed that it was an urgent request and I came right away,” Bianca explained.

“I’m glad you did,” he said with a charged look in his eyes. He peered at Bianca and drank her in. Her brow curls, the feminine curve of her waist, the shy way her smile caught his attention immediately. And those eyes… if they were pools, he would have fallen in. Being in her presence was causing Grant’s thoughts to soften and sway down a path he didn’t often venture down.
